Types of Brakes and How They Work

There are two main types of brakes on cars, disc brakes and drum brakes. Disc brakes are what most cars have today and consist of a metal disc that is attached to the wheel. When the driver steps on the brake pedal, a caliper will squeeze the disc from either side with friction pads. This causes friction that slows down or stops your car, depending on how hard you press down on the brake pedal. Drum brakes are located inside a metal housing and operate using two shoes instead of pads like in disc brakes. The shoes push outward against the inner wall of the drum whenever you press down on the brake pedal, slowing or stopping your vehicle as well.

Signs to Replace Brakes

There are several signs that indicate it's time for new brakes. The most common and loudest sign is a high-pitched squealing sound as soon as you press on the brake pedal. This is due to wear indicators located in the brake pads, which let off this sound when the pads have reached their minimum thickness. Another sign is vibrations or pulsations in the steering wheel or pedal as you press on the brakes; this could mean there is an issue with either one of the rotors or drums or that there are misaligned brake calipers. Finally, if your car takes longer than usual to stop after pressing the brake pedal, this could also be a sign that your brake pads need to be replaced.
